ARP recommends the use of main studs over bolts whenever possible for several key reasons. First is the ability to obtain more accurate torque readings because studs don't 'twist' into the block. All clamping forces are on one axis. By the same token, there is less force exerted on block threads, which contributes to improved block life. Finally, there are factors of easier engine assembly and proper alignment of main caps every time.

A main stud should be installed in a 'relaxed' mode - never crank it in tightly using a jammed nut. If everything is right, the stud should be installed finger tight using any Teflon-based thread sealant (NOT thread locker). Then, when applying torque to the nut, the stud will stretch only on the vertical axis.

All kits come complete with hardened parallel-ground washers and aerospace quality nuts. The studs are manufactured from 8740 chrome moly steel, heat-treated to 190,000 psi tensile strength and precision J-form threads rolled after heat-treat to create a fastener that has threads 1,000% stronger than others. Don't settle for anything less than the best. Insist on genuine ARP studs. You'll find the name stamped right on the end!

Clevite 77® TriMetal™ Main Bearings are strongly recommended with the INTENSE™ Main Stud Kit.

The ARP Main Cross Bolts are an excellent complement to this stud kit.
