INTENSE is proud to bring you the latest revision of our popular MLS gaskets. We have spent countless hours and thousands of dollars developing and testing the best gaskets for the 3800. These new multi-layer gaskets from Cometic are the best fitting, best sealing gaskets weve had yet! In each revision of these gaskets we found something to improve upon and advance the technology of sealing our high-boost, high horsepower applications. We have been on the cutting edge of development for the MLS gaskets since their birth, and now were confident that we have the most superior design possible. But dont think were done yet. Well continue to lead the way and bring you the best, most innovative products possible.
Plainly stated, these are the best head gaskets money can buy. Multiple viton coated outer embossed spring steel layers sandwiched with uncoated stainless steel inner layers, one embossed for excellent sealing, and the other to provide support to the gasket. These gaskets are manufactured with bore sizes of 3.82", 3.84" or 3.86", to accommodate stock 3.80" bore cylinders, in addition to cylinders that have been bored .010", .020" or .030" oversized.
Cometic manufactured, INTENSE designed MLS (multi-layer steel) Head Gaskets are state of the art by design and material selection. MLS gaskets start out with two .010" stainless steel outer skins, which are embossed. The embossed areas create a mechanical seal. A viton coating is also applied creating a micro seal. A minimum surface finish of 80 RA or 32RMS or finer is required to obtain maximum sealing results on both head and deck surfaces. The finer the surface finish the better.
The middle layers are generally comprised of uncoated stainless steel. The middle layers also set up the overall or stack height of the gasket. For example, two outer layers of .010" each plus a combined middle later of .045" equates to a .065" thick head gasket. Since the layers are all steel they do not compress and the thickness given is the compressed thickness as well. New for our fourth revision is the embossment of one of the middle layers. This creates another sealing section of the gasket, and makes the sealing properties of these gaskets vastly superior to any design currently on the market.
Strength and flexibility are just two of the major benefits gained from using an MLS gasket. The all-steel construction makes the MLS head gasket the ideal choice for high compression applications as well as supercharger or turbocharger applications. The material is also compatible with nitrous oxide. In addition MLS head gaskets also offer tuning flexibility through different overall thickness options. An MLS gasket offers superior strength even over copper head gaskets and no o-ringing is necessary.
When installing MLS head gaskets, Cometic does not recommend the use of any type of sealants. However we have had very good success using Permatex® Copper Spray-A-Gasket Sealant with these gaskets. Also you will notice there are embossments around the cylinder bores and all water and oil passages. These embossments create a leakproof seal pass after pass. As with any gaskets all mating surfaces should be clean, flat and parallel. When tightening the head bolts, follow the manufacturer's specifications for torque sequence and amount. Retorquing is NOT required.
SIZING:
Bore size of the gasket should be .010-.020" greater than that of your cylinder (stock is 3.80"). We stock common bore sizes in a variety of thicknesses. Layer quantity varies by thickness, and does affect pricing. Custom sizes are available, but please allow 2-3 weeks lead time for them to be made.
Here is a guideline chart of compression changes for various gasket thicknesses, using stock pistons and bore:
Thickness | L36/L26 | L67/L32 |
---|---|---|
0.045" | 9.75 | 8.8 |
.0.052" | 9.6 | 8.7 |
.0.060" | 9.44 | 8.54 |
0.062" (stock) | 9.4 | 8.5 |
0.065" | 9.35 | 8.45 |
NOTES:
- Typically sold in matched pairs-- please email or call if you need a single gasket.
- These gaskets work very well with our ARP Head Stud Kits
