This tool is a must-have if you're building or upgrading the top end of your pushrod engine. The 3800 and LS engines do not have lash adjustment at the rocker arm, so proper pushrod length is critical to get proper preload at the hydraulic lifter. Machining a block deck or the base of your heads, or installing a custom or large profile cam will usually change the length of pushrod needed.

To use the tool, one installs it instead of a conventional pushrod, set looser than stock (assuming engine has been rotated over to put the valve in a closed position). You bolt the rocker arm in place, torquing the bolt with a wrench. You then unscrew the pushrod until the slack is taken up in the rocker and lifter, but not so far as to compress either. Then remove the rocker and read the length of the pushrod checker, recording it on a piece of paper. Then repeat this process for at least three more valves. This lets you know your zero preload point.

Once you know your zero point, you can add preload length for the type of lifters you're using, or for your application. Typical 3800, COMP OE-M, and LS7 lifter preload is .060-.100" so you'd add .080" usually. COMP OE-R lifters prefer .000-.005" preload, so adding .005" to the number from the tool is preferable.
